Abstract
Background: The clinical presentation and the pathologic characteristics of cystic walls in cystic meningiomas are not well known. The authors report here on our experience with the clinical and histopathologic characteristics of this disease.

Materials and Methods: From January 1993 to December 2003, we have experienced 21 patients(5.48%) diagnosed with cystic meningioma among 365 patients. These patients were divided into groups by Nauta¡¯s and Rengachary¡¯s classification. The patient¡¯s sex, age, location of the tumor, clinical manifestations, findings of magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) and histopathology were analyzed.

Results: The mean duration of symptoms was 1.6months and duration of symptoms was generally relatively short. The histopathologies were atypical meningiomas in 5cases and benign meningiomas in 16 cases. For the type I and II, all the cases were enhanced on MRI and had the positive tumor cells in the cystic wall. On the type III and IV, all the cases were not enhanced and one case(type III) had the positive cells in non-enhanced cystic wall.

Conclusion: We suggest that when imaging study reveal contrast enhancement, the cyst wall should be completely removed. Even if there¡¯s no contrast enhancement, multiple biopsies of the cyst wall should be performed to confirm whether there are tumor cells present in cystic wall.
